BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams men's basketball team lost to Connecticut College on Saturday afternoon, 69-53, in the Campus Rec Center Gymnasium.
Mac Annus led the Hawks in scoring with 18 points, going 6-13 from the field including 4-8 from three.
Ty Higgins was the Hawks' next leading scorer with 11 points, going 4-9 from the field and 3-7 from three. Higgins also recorded two steals for the Hawks. Overall, the Hawks shot 39.6 percent from the field in the game.
Connecticut College opened the game on an 8-0 run, with the Hawks' first basket coming nearly four minutes into the game. After this early deficit, Roger Williams was able to find a spark, three-pointers from Annus and Higgins brought the Camels lead down to one, but the Hawks followed with a nearly six-minute scoring drought. Over this time, Connecticut answered by scoring 11 straight points, extending their lead to 12. The Camels' lead grew to as many as 14 points in the first half, but the Hawks continued to fight. Roger Williams shut out Connecticut College in the final three minutes of the half and scored seven points of their own, cutting the Camels' lead down to seven.
At the half, Connecticut held a 32-25 lead over Roger Williams. The Hawks shot 40 percent from the field in the first half, while the Camels shot 56 percent. The Hawks had a better percentage from three (36.4) than the Camels (25.0). However, the Camels outscored the Hawks 30-10 in points in the paint.
The Hawks found themselves struggling again to start off the second half. Over the first seven minutes, Connecticut College went on a 15-2 run and extended their lead to 20 points. Annus drilled a couple threes to give the Hawks' offense a boost, but their defense continued to give points to the Camels. The Hawks were unable to cut into the lead, and Connecticut's lead hovered around 20 points for the rest of the game.
Roger Williams (0-3, 0-0 CCC) will travel to face Wheaton on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 6:00 pm. The Hawks will then return home to face Clark on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 2:00 pm. Roger Williams will begin Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 pm.
