NORTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University men's basketball team remains without a win on the season, falling to Wheaton, 85-71, on the road on Tuesday at Emerson Gymnasium.
The Hawks trailed in points off turnovers, 11-2, and second chance points. But played level in points in the paint, 40-40.
Mac Annus (Belmont, Mass.) recorded 19 points with a 9-13 performance from the field, while also totaling three rebounds, a pair of assists, block, and a steal.
Finn Miller (Stamford, Conn.) had 14 points with three boards, with a pair of steals on the defensive end, with
Ty Higgins (New Marlborough, Mass.) and
John Ah Kao (Dumont, N.J.) recording double-digit points in the game.
Tristan Herry had 26 points, with five boards in the game, while Sal Pedevillano added 16 points. Eoin Morrissey pulled down 10 rebounds and had a pair of blocks for the Lyons.
Opening the game with a 15-9 lead, the Hawks watched as Jaden Keliher and Herry knocked down back-to-back shots to cut the lead back down to one. Roger Williams regained a six-point lead with 7:21 remaining in the opening half after
Will MacDonald (York, Maine) knocked down a jumper.
With 3:14 left in the opening half, Duncan Bubar, put back a tip in off a miss from Keliher to give the Lyons their first lead of the game. The Hawks recovered with a three by Miller, and followed on the ensuing possession with a lay-in by Annus. The Hawks led by two with 52 seconds, remaining in the half, before Herry knocked down a three with 35 seconds remaining to take a one-point lead for Wheaton into the break.
Wheaton grew their lead to three with a layup with 9:39 remaining in the second half, before a three by Annus levelled the game a 59-59. The Lyons then expanded their lead to six before a layup by
Philip Sughrue (Stamford, Conn.) cut the deficit to four. Wheaton expanded their lead to 13 before, Annus knocked down a jumper with just over a minute remaining. Wheaton's Pedevillano hit a three with 47 seconds remaining to close out scoring and the win for the Lyons.
Roger Williams (0-4, 0-0 CCC) will host Clark on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 2 pm in the Campus Rec Center, before opening Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 pm.
