Women’s Volleyball: Hawks Season Ends in CCC First Round

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team saw their season come to a close Tuesday evening, falling to Western New England, 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 26-24), in Springfield.
 
The Hawks hit, .144, while holding the Golden Bears to a .171 hitting percentage in the match.  The Hawks trailed in kills, 32-30, as well as assists, 29-25, but led in digs, 53-47, and blocks, 4-1.        
 
Marianna Hernandez led the team with 15 digs, with Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) following with 12 and 10 respectively. Mattiucci also had 20 assists in the match, with Brianna Piccietti (Batavia, Ill.) leading with 10 kills on the match.  Jillian Smith (New Milford, Conn.) had seven kills, with Mattiucci and Taylor Joyner (Ashburn, Va.) each adding four.
 
In the opening set, the Hawks leveled the score at seven a piece, before the Golden Bears went on a 6-2 run to take command with a four-point lead. Roger Williams then cut the lead to three but Western New England rattled off six of the next seven points taking an 19-11 advantage, taking advantage before closing out the set.
 
After the Hawks took a 14-13 lead in the second frame, with a string of four straight points, The Golden Bears returned the favor with a four-point run of their own, before cutting the lead back down to one, trailing 21-20.  Ella Soutter recorded back-to-back kills for Western New England to go up by three. After a Hawk point the Golden Bears took two straight points to close out the set, taking a 2-0 advantage into the third.
 
In the third set, both teams were tied at 11, but Western New England again used a run to jump out to a nine-point lead. The Hawks were able to battle back, using a kill by Picchietti to level the score at 24-24, but consecutive Golden Bear kills by Alissa Hawes and Elizabeth Long sealed the match in favor of Western New England.
 
Roger Williams concludes their season 9-16, with a 3-5 record within CCC action.
