BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams men's basketball team won 95-65 against Fitchburg State on Saturday afternoon. The game was played at RWU's Campus Rec Center Gymnasium
The Hawks were led by Philip Sughrue (Winchester, Mass.), who scored 21 points and had 7 assists. Finn Miller (Stamford, Conn.), John Ah Kao (Dumont, N.J.), Ty Higgins (New Marlborough, Mass), and Mac Annus (Belmont, Mass) all finished the game with double digit points for the Hawks.
In the opening minutes of the game, the Hawks went 4-4 from beyond the arc. This allowed them to open a quick 16-8 lead. After a few buckets by the Falcons, Roger Williams answered with a 15- 5 run, making the score 31-17 and giving them a 14-point lead with 8:53 left in the half. They were able to extend their lead to as much as 17 in the first half, and led by 15 at halftime with a score of 46-31.
The first half was highlighted by great shooting by Roger Williams. The Hawks were able to score from all over the court, with 20 points in the paint as well as making nine three-pointers. Overall, the Hawks shot 56.5 percent from the floor, including 69.2 percent from three. They were also 11-14 from the free throw line.
In the first ten minutes of the second, both teams were evenly matched. The Hawks and Falcons traded baskets, and the Hawks led by 17 with 10:58 left in the game. However, from that point Roger Williams regained their intensity from the first half. The Hawks went on an 18-2 run, giving them their largest lead of the game. The offensive and defensive surge continued for the rest of the game, and Roger Williams ended with a 30-point lead and a final score of 95-65
Roger Williams (4-5, 3-0 CCC) will have a break in play for three weeks. The Hawks will then face Salve Regina on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 1:00 pm in the Rogers Center
