BRISTOL, R.I. – The No. 1 seed in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Women's Basketball Tournament, Roger Williams women's basketball team came out on top in the CCC Championship against No. 6 Endicott on Sunday afternoon in the Campus Rec Center Gymnasium, 61-51.
Caroline Elie (Rockland, Mass.) earned 16 points, three assists, and two steals. Also scoring in double figures was Nikki Rosa (Nahant, Mass.) with 12 points, she also had one block and one steal. Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.) scored 10 points, had five assists, and six steals.
On the Gulls side, Sarah Dempsey scored 18 points, had two blocks, and one steal. The other Endicott player to have points in the double digits was Taylor Bogdanski with 10. She added four rebounds and two assists.
In the first quarter, the Hawks were put on the scoreboard on a free throw by Elie. She quickly put in a layup after stealing the ball from the Gulls. Endicott scored from a jumper before the Hawks earned points from another layup. Roger Williams sank five layups in the first frame. Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) made the lone three-pointer in the quarter, propelling the Hawks ahead. Roger Williams scored four more times before the Gulls made another basket. A jumper by Sophie Araneo (Branford, Conn.) further solidified the Hawks lead in the first quarter, 19-10.
Going into the second quarter, Endicott scored from two jumpers and a layup before the Hawks had a layup put in by Elie. Another layup was added by Peri MacDonald (Melrose, Mass.), followed by a three-pointer sunk by Elie. The Gulls earned a three-pointer of their own before the end of the period, bringing the score to 28-19 with the Hawks up going into the second half.
Repeating play from the second quarter, the Gulls scored twice, by way of layup, before the Hawks had a jumper put in the net by Araneo. Late in the period Endicott closed the gap with a layup that put them down by one, 34-33. A jumper by Galligan, followed by a pair of free throws put in by Rosa pulled the Hawks up at the end of the third quarter, 38-33.
In the fourth quarter the Hawks scored 23 points. Endicott outdid Roger Williams in rebounds, 13-10, while the Hawks led the Gulls in steals, 3-2, and blocks 2-0.
The Roger Williams (25-3, 18-0 CCC) will be competing in the NCAA Division III National Tournament that begins on Friday, Mar. 3. The bracket will be announced on Monday, Feb. 27 at 3 pm.
