BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University men's basketball team defeated Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) foe Gordon Saturday afternoon at the Campus Rec Center, 84-63.
John Ah Kao (Dumont, N.J.) scored a game high 16 points coming off the bench, with a 4-5 shooting performance from the floor while dishing out five assists.
Nate Lopes (Scituate, Mass.) tallied another double-double, pulling down 10 boards and scoring 14 points. Lopes also added a pair of steals and a block on the defensive end.
Ty Higgins (New Marlborough, Mass.) and
Mac Annus (Belmont, Mass.) also added double digit scoring with 11 and 10 points respectively.
For Gordon, Ryan Tertel had 12 points with Zachary Bennett adding 11 points for the squad.
After starting the game down 5-0, Lopes knocked down back-to-back threes on consecutive possessions to take a 6-5 lead. A free throw by Treyton Tebbs tied the game at six, before
Philip Sughrue (Winchester, Mass.) got in on the action, knocking down a pair of threes of his own on back-to-back trips down the floor. The Hawks used that to score 10 straight points to take a 19-7 lead.
Gordon cut the lead down to six with 10 minutes remaining in the opening half, but the Hawks were able to build their lead back out to 27 at the halftime break, leading 45-18.
The Hawks would not look back, as they cruised in the second half to the victory.
Roger Williams (13-8, 10-4 CCC) currently sit third in the CCC behind Western New England and Endicott, and will travel to take on Salve Regina on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 pm. The Hawks will then play Wentworth in Boston on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 3 pm.
