Men’s Basketball: Hawk Drop CCC Contest to Seahawks

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Roger Williams University men's basketball team fell to Salve Regina on Tuesday evening in the Rodgers Recreation Center, 81-71, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.
 
Mac Annus (Belmont, Mass.) led the Hawks with 27 points on an 11-18 night from the floor, with three rebounds and a pair of assists. Annus also had two steals in the matchup. Nate Lopes (Scituate, Mass.) had 14 points with six rebounds, with five blocks, two steals and two assists. Philip Sughrue (Winchester, Mass.) was the third Hawk to score in double-figures, going 4-6 from the floor, with three boards and four assists.
 
Mikey Spencer led the charge for Salve Regina with 30 points, while Jojo Powers and Clay Brochu both added 12 points apiece, while Powers also had two blocks and a steal.
 
After Salve Regina jumped out to a 4-0 lead, Lopes responded with a three for the Hawks before Annus hit a jumper on the ensuing possession to take a one-point lead. The Hawks led 9-6 before Spencer hit back-to-back shots retaking the lead with 15:54 remaining.
 
Salve jumped out to a 10-point lead with the Hawks trailing 24-14, before putting together a stretch of seven straight points to cur the lead down to three. The Hawks managed to hang around with going into the second half tied, 37-37.
 
The Hawks and Seahawks were battling back and forth in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, before Spencer knocked down a three for Salve Regina. After stretching their lead to eight points with 7:06 remaining.  The Hawks cut the lead down to three before Salve Regina expanded their lead again putting the matchup out of reach.
 
Roger Williams (13-9, 10-5 CCC) will face Wentworth on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 3 pm in Boston before playing host to Endicott on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7:30 pm in the Campus Rec Center.
