NEWPORT, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's basketball team faced off against in-state Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) foe Salve Regina on Tuesday evening in the Rodgers Recreation Center, coming away with a 64-27 win.
Caroline Elie (Rockland, Mass.) led the Hawks with 12 points on a 5-8 shooting performance from the field. Elie also pulled down nine boards while dishing out four assists in the matchup.
Peri MacDonald (Melrose, Mass.) had seven rebounds with a pair of assists, while
Kendi Barnard (Bedford, N.H.) finished just shy of a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds. Barnard also played a key role on the defensive end with three steals and a pair of blocks, along with five assists.
Ashley Rourke led Salve Regina with nine points and a pair of boards, while Briana Neary had four points with seven rebounds on the day, to go with two blocks and two steals.
To open up the contest the Seahawks' scored on their opening possession when Morgan Shuey finished on her lay-in attempt. The Hawks then saw
Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.) convert a layup after, and Elie rebound and quick pass to Galligan. After Salve took a 3-2 lead, Roger Williams scored the next nine buckets to end the quarter, with an 18-3 lead.
In the second quarter, Rosa kicked things off with a three-point jumper, that
Sophie Araneo (Branford, Conn.) followed with a jumper in a few minutes later, the Seahawks saw Rourke nail a three-point jumper, to end the Hawks 21-point run. The Hawks went into the halftime break leading, 31-10.
The Hawks then used their strong defense to hold the Seahawks to five points in the third quarter coming out of the gates to expand their lead by 12 in the quarter. They then edged out the Hawks 16-11 in the fourth quarter on their way to the victory.
Roger Williams (19-3, 15-0 CCC) will travel to Wentworth on Saturday, Feb. 11 for a 1 pm tilt against the Leopards up in Boston. The Hawks will then host Endicott on Wednesday, Feb. 15 before closing the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 18 against Nichols.
