AUBURNDALE, Fla. — The Roger Williams University baseball team opened their 2023 campaign on Friday, defeating Southern Maine, 8-4, at Lake Myrtle Park.
The Hawks picked up their first win over Southern Maine since, Apr. 6, 1983, when Roger Williams defeated the Huskies, 7-3. The Hawks are now 2-8 all-time against Southern Maine.
Will Ernst (Worcester, Mass.) picked up the win for Roger Williams in his first career appearance, while
Kevin Blum (New City, N.Y.) picked up the save, with 2.0 innings, striking out three, facing 10 batters, holding the Huskies scoreless.
Matt Massaro (Fairfield, Conn.) went 3-for-4, batting from the leadoff spot, knocking in two runs with a double and a walk.
Christopher Flynn (Randolph, N.J.) hit the lone run for the homerun, with a 3-for-5 day bringing in three runs.
Jack Morin (North Andover, Mass.) and
Matt Falvey (Walpole, Mass.) each had a pair of hits with a double.
Southern Maine started scoring in the opening frame, after Tom Vesosky hit a single to open the inning, Cam Seymour hit a home run over the right field wall, giving Southern Maine a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, the Hawks responded with Flynn hitting a homer of his own to right field, cutting the lead in half. After a single by

, Nick Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) put a bunt down to put Smith on second.
Matt Massaro then singled to center field bringing in Smith, leveling the score.
After Southern Maine added a run in the top of the third, the Hawks offense added two in the bottom of the fourth after back-to-back doubles by
Matt Massaro and Morin put the Hawks ahead, 4-3.
A run in the top of the seventh by the Huskies leveled the score before Flynn hit an single to short, beating the throw, which then went wide of the first baseman, bringing in
Aidan Hawley (Natick, Mass.). The Hawks then added three in the bottom of the eighth closing out for the win.
Roger Williams (1-0, 0-0 CCC) will play Bethel on Saturday, Mar. 12 in doubleheader as they continue their Spring Break trip, beginning at 1:15 pm.
