WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Roger Williams University softball team began their 2023 campaign, falling to Augsburg, 5-1, and Clarkson, 9-6.
Against Augsburg, the Auggies struck first with Olivia Hennager and Jaime Olson both bringing in a run, with the Auggies leading, 2-1.
Raegen Germano (Old Tappan, N.J.) scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth to cut the Auggie lead in half.
In the sixth inning, Augsburg added three runs to hold onto the lead.
Against Clarkson, Emma Sabourin added a run in the opening inning, before the Hawks answered with two runs coming off a
Jaime Wells (Castle Rock, Colo.) single, with
Caroline Thomas (Cranston, R.I.) and
Isabelle Rosado (Central Islip, N.Y.) coming across the plate.
Clarkson added four straight runs, before the Hawks added a run in the bottom of the fifth with Thomas, bringing in
Casey Uryga (Berlin, Conn.). Clarkson added a run in the top of the seventh, bringing the lead to 6-3, but Roger Williams added three runs in the bottom half of the inning to level the score, 6-6, to force extra innings.
In the eighth the Hawks were unable to respond after the Golden Knights scored three runs in the top half of the frame, as Clarkson took the win.
Roger Williams (0-2, 0-0 CCC) will play Ripon on Sunday, Mar. 12 at 9 am before facing Lakeland at 2 pm. The Hawks will then play on Monday, Mar. 13 at 2 pm against Minnesota Morris.
