WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Roger Williams University softball team took both games in their final day in Florida for Spring Break, with the Hawks defeating Cornell College, 6-3, and coming away with a 11-1 win over Beloit.
Against Cornell College,
Raegen Germano (Old Tappan, N.J.) took the circle to start the game for the Hawks, going 4.2 innings with three strikeouts.
Nicole Corey (Dighton, Mass.) came in, pitching 2.1 innings in relief, picking up the save while holding Cornell scoreless.
At the plate,
Taylor Howell (Sandwich, Mass.) went 2-for4 with a pair of RBIs as well as coming across to score a run for Roger Williams.
Casey Uryga (Berlin, Conn.) also picked up a pair of hits, going 2-for-3 coming across to score.
Caroline Thomas (Cranston, R.I.) and
Kayleigh O'Conner (Southington, Conn.) both added RBIs.
In the first inning The Hawks held the Rams scoreless in the top half of the inning. The Hawks had a runner on third with two outs in the bottom half of the inning before Howell hit a single into right field bringing in Thomas from third.
Cornell responded with a run in the top half of the second inning to level the score at 1-1. Roger Williams then scored when Uryga put down a bunt single with an error advancing
Kelsey Burr (Warwick, R.I.) home to put the Hawks up by one. The Hawks then saw Thomas, Wells and Howell each bring in a runner on three consecutive at bats, before O'Connor singled to right field brining in Howell, putting the Hawks up 6-1 after two.
After both teams were held scoreless in the third, the Rams then put a pair of runs on in the top of the third cutting the Hawks lead down to three. Roger Williams was able to keep the Rams off the scoreboard the rest of the game, holding on for the 6-3 win.
In their next tilt against Beloit,
Taylor Myers (East Haven, Conn.) pitched five innings giving up five hits.
The Hawks were scoreless until the top of the third inning when a double by
Jaime Wells (Castle Rock, Colo.) brought in
Jax Beaulieu (Sandwich, Mass.) and
Isabelle Rosado (Central Islip, N.Y.) to give the Hawks a two-run lead with a runner on second and third.
Howell then hit a single to left field clearing the bases, with Roger Williams holding a 4-0 advantage. The Hawks added a run with
Maddie Predaris (Rye, N.H.) scoring a runner, and
Jess Hassell picking up her first career RBI.
Beloit added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, But Roger Williams exploded for another five runs in the top of the fifth inning taking a commanding 11-1 lead. The Buccaneers were then held scoreless in the bottom of the fifth as the Hawks closed out the win.
Roger Williams (4-6, 0-0 CCC) will return to the Northeast, facing Coast Guard on Tuesday, Mar. 21 at 2:30 pm in a non-conference doubleheader.
