DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Roger Williams University baseball team closed out their Spring Break Trip to Florida on Saturday morning, falling to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 9-3.
JT Gunzy (Danbury, Conn.) took the bump for the Hawks going 5.1 innings, with four strikeouts, putting up three scoreless frames. The Hawks bats put up eight hits in the contest, while fielders did not commit an error.
Lucas Lariviere (Cumberland, R.I.) went three innings in relief striking out three while allowing one hit, in 10 batters faced.
Owen Hibbard (Roxbury, Conn.) went 3-for-5 at the plate with a pair of RBIs, while
Matt Falvey (Walpole, Mass.) went 1-for-3 with one run and two RBIs.
Matt Massaro also picked up an RBI and
Jack Morin (North Andover, Mass.) and
Christopher Flynn (Randolph, N.J.), and
Braden Ventura (Swansea, Mass.) each added a hit.
Coming of the opening pitch of the game the Pointers hit a home run over the left field wall to take a 1-0 lead. After being held scoreless in the opening two inning, Roger Williams responded with a Hibbard double down the left field brought home Ventura who was on second. The next batter was
Matt Massaro who had knocked in Falvey.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Hawks added another pair of runs with a sacrifice fly by
Michael Uriati (Barrington, R.I.) brining in
Nick Zobian (Califon, N.J.). Falvey then knocked a single into the left centerfield gap to bring in Masino.
The explosive bats of the Pointers appeared with the Bradley Comer smacking a shot over the left center field wall to give the level the score at 4-4. In the sixth inning the UW-Stevens Point offense rallied for five runs taking a 9-4 lead.
A pair of runs in the eighth inning was not enough for Roger Williams as the Hawks ultimately fell.
Roger Williams (1-9, 0-0 CCC) will be back in action on Tuesday, Mar. 21 at 3 pm on Paolino Field for their home opener against Rhode Island College before hosting the Golden Bears of Western New England for a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 25 with first pitch at 12 pm.
