Women’s Lacrosse: Hawks Outscore Bantams in Second Half, Fall to Trinity

HARTFORD, Conn. –The Roger Williams University women's lacrosse team outscored Trinity 8-6 in the second half, but were unable to overcome a three-goal halftime deficit, eventually falling to the Bantams, 14-13.
 
Julia Kelley (Foxborough, Mass.) had eight points on four goals and four assists, putting all seven of her shot attempts on cage. Mandy Beck (Old Saybrook, Conn.) had three goals and a pair of assists for five points, while also picking up a draw control. Ryleigh Cavanaugh (Manchester, N.H.) had nine draw controls in the contest as well as a ground ball with four goals on the game.
 
On the defensive end of the field Kate Shultz (Portsmouth, N.H.) caused four turnovers on the day with a pair of ground balls in the effort, while Kimmy Creegan (Ramsey, N.J.) picked up a pair of draws, and had three caused turnovers to pair with her three ground balls. Caroline Roach (Acton, Mass.) made seven saves in cage.
 
The Hawks put a goal on the scoreboard early when Kelley found Cavanaguh for the score. Just 41 seconds later, the Bantams came back to level the contest, before Kelley scored her first of the contest 37 seconds later. The Hawks kept the flurry of goals coming scoring their third goal in the opening 5:30 of play when Beck struck.
 
Trinity then scored three straight goals to take a 4-3 advantage into the second quarter, when Molly McGuckin scored her third consecutive goal for the Bantams with 11:16 remaining in the second quarter. A Hawk goal broke up the run before the Bantams saw Lily Ives score three straight goals taking an 8-4 lead.  A goal by Karli Chapin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) put the hawks down by three entering the second half.
 
The Bantams took a six-goal lead with 7:39 remaining in the third quarter, after scoring three goals to open the half. Roger Williams responded by rattling off five straight goals, cutting the Bantam lead down to one with 14:26 remaining.
 
After another three-goal run by Trinity to take a 14-10 lead with 6:28 remaining in the contest, the Hawks found goals by Kelley and Campbell Haller (Nashua, N.H.) cutting the lead down to a pair with 3:21 remaining.  The Hawks would tack on one more with Kelly scoring with 11 seconds remaining in the game.
 
Roger Williams (3-4, 0-0 CCC) will begin Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC0 play on Wednesday, Mar. 29 at 6 pm.  They will then face Curry in Milton, Mass. on Friday, Mar. 31 at 4 pm.
