BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Roger Williams University women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon, falling to #16 Bowdoin, 17-9, on Ryan Field.
The Hawks were out shot 28-19, while both teams committed 18 turnovers a piece. Roger Williams completed 14 of their 17 clear attempts, while the Polar Bears were successful in all but one of their 17 attempts. Bowdoin also held a 21-12 edge in the ground ball battle.
Leading for the Hawks,
Lily Cunningham (Melrose, Mass.) scored four goals totaling four points on six shots, putting five on cage.
Lily Cunningham also picked up a pair of ground balls and two draw controls, converting both free position attempts that she had.
Julia Kelley (Foxborough, Mass.) also tallied four points with a pair of goals and two helpers on the day, while
Karli Chapin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) had two points with a goal and assist.
Mandy Beck (Old Saybrook, Conn.) and
Mia Pantano (Reading, Mass.) each had one goal each, with
Ella Waryas (Foxborough, Mass.) being awarded with an assist.
Colleen McAloon led the way for Bowdoin, scoring a game-high five points with three goals and a pair of assists, while Fiona Bundy and Sophia Sudano, each had four goals. Ainsley Ramsey had a pair of caused turnovers.
After Bowdoin scored a pair of goals in the opening five minutes of play,
Lily Cunningham fired a shot off a free position attempt, cutting the Polar Bear lead in half. After Annabelle Gersch scored making it 3-1, Chapin found Kelley in space, that Kelley was able to fire into the cage making the game 3-2. A goal by Bowdoin with 1:52 remaining gave the Polar Bears the lead going into the second frame, 4-2.
Just 46 seconds into the frame, the Polar Bears struck again off a free position before they doubled up with two goals over a 56 second time frame beginning with 10:37 remaining in the second quarter. After three more goals by Bowdoin,
Lily Cunningham scored her second goal of the game cutting the score, 10-3. The Polar Bears scored four goals in the final four minutes of play to go into halftime leading, 14-3.
Bowdoin and Roger Williams played to a 2-2 draw in the third quarter, before the Hawks outscored the Polar Bears, 4-1, in the final frame.
Roger Williams (2-1, 0-0 CCC) will be back in action on Saturday, Mar. 11 at 1 pm against MIT on Bayside Field. The Hawks will then face a trio of NESCAC opponents during the following week for Spring Break.
