BRISTOL, R.I.—The Roger Williams men's lacrosse team defeated the University of New England Nor'easters Saturday afternoon on Bayside Field, 15-8.
The seniors on the team were recognized in a pre-game ceremony surrounded by coaches, friends, and family. The six seniors who were honored are
Sean Tyldesley (Grafton, Mass.),
Kevin Murphy (Ramsey, N.J.),
Noah Ravas (Baldwinsville, N.Y.),
Jack Finnie (Westfield, Mass.),
Jordan Pivarnik (Trumbull, Conn.), and
Casey Brennan (Shelton, Conn.).
Leading scoring for the Hawks were
Ryan Vendetti (Farmington, Conn.) and
Pherson Szuluk (Avon, Conn.), earning four goals apiece. Murphy added three goals of his own, one assist, and picked up three ground balls. On the defensive side,
Kyle Zirn (Chester, N.H.) recorded nine ground balls and seven caused turnovers in the game.
In the first quarter, Vendetti began scoring, assisted by
Matt Halpin (Hanover, Mass.). Halpin then put a ball in the net, earning the Hawks second goal. UNE's Andrew Lawrence scored a goal and added the Nor'easters to the scoreboard. Vendetti was able to get another ball in the goal before UNE scored a second time, putting the Hawks up 3-2 at the end of the period.
A quick goal by the Nor'easters knotted things up going into the second quarter before three goals made by Murphy propelled the Hawks ahead. UNE responded with a goal of their own. Halpin, assisted by
Mike Intravaia (Weymouth, Mass.), put the ball in the net. Szuluk scored one more for the Hawks at the end of the half to maintain their lead, 8-4.
Szuluk was first to score coming into the third quarter, followed by a goal by
Brian Gazard (Ashland, Mass.). Vendetti put in the Hawks' third goal of the period before the Nor'easters were able to score. After a second goal by UNE, Szuluk, assisted by Murphy, earned another goal with seconds left in the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Roger Williams got three more shots in the net before UNE was able to score. A goal by the Nor'easters' Colin Watt rounded out scoring for the game. The Hawks outdid the Nor'easters in faceoffs, 15-12.
Roger Williams (8-5, 4-2 CCC) is set to take on Wentworth on Saturday, April 22 at 7 pm. They will then host Salve Regina on Wednesday, April 26.
