BOSTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University men's lacrosse team outlasted Wentworth 12-7 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday, defeating the Leopards at Sweeney Field.
Matt Halpin (Hanover, Mass.) tallied nine points with a four goal and five assist performance.
Pehrson Szuluk (Avon, Conn.) added four points with three goals and an assist while
Kevin Murphy (Ramsey, N.J.) scored twice.
Kyle Zirn (Chester, N.H.) had nine ground balls and six caused turnovers in the matchup and
Max Kimmel (Milford, Conn.) had 10 saves and seven goals allowed in the tilt.
Wentworth opened scoring up in the opening minutes, with Logan Maklin putting the first goal in for the Leopards. After a goal to go up 2-0, Roger Williams watched Halpin dish a pass out to
Jack Kester (Londonderry, N.H.) to cut the deficit in half.
With the Leopards going up 4-1, Roger Williams saw Szuluk and Halpin score back-to-back goals to go into the second quarter trailing, 4-3. Another pair of goals to start the second half put the Hawks up 5-4 before the Leopards, leveled the score before halftime at 5-5.
In the third quarter, Wentworth scored first with Drew Bouley scoring for the Leopards, before Szuluk and Halpin combined for a three-goal run, taking an 8-6 advantage. The Hawks and Leopards traded goals heading into the final frame, 9-7.
The Hawks added three goals in the fourth quarter, as they held on for the win.
Roger Williams (9-5, 5-2 CCC) will host Salve Regina in their regular season finale on Wednesday, Apr. 26 at 7 pm on Bayside Field. The Hawks will now host a CCC Tournament Quarterfinal on Saturday, Apr. 29.
