BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University softball team fell to Western New England 5-0 in game one of their Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader on Saturday, before rebounding for a 3-0 win against the Golden Bears in game two.
In game one, the Hawks were stifled by the Golden Bears pitching, as the Golden Bears only allowed one hit, and one hit batter for two runners in the game.
In the first inning Western New England brought in a run with a double down the left field line, before a single through the left side drove in the second run of the game. A two-run homerun over the left field wall was able to bring two across to score before a RBI ground out by the Golden Bears in the top of the fourth rounded out scoring.
In game two, freshman hurler
Raegen Germano (Old Tappan, N.J.) pitched a complete game shutout, throwing seven innings giving up two hits with one walk, while recording six strikeouts. At the dish,
Taylor Howell (Sandwich, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and
Caroline Thomas (Cranston, R.I.) also added a pair of hits and a walk.
In the bottom of the first the Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead when
Jaime Wells (Castle Rock, Conn.) hit an RBI single to with
Emma MacLean (Newton, Mass.) coming around to score. The Hawks again struck in the bottom of the third with Howell knocking an RBI double to left center field, as
Casey Uryga (Berlin, Conn.) came in from second.
Roger Williams rounded out scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning with Howell hitting a single to center field, while MacLean came across to score for the second time.
Roger Williams (9-20, 2-8 CCC) will travel to Mitchell on Tuesday, Apr. 18 at 2:30 pm for a non-conference doubleheader. The Hawks will then round out their weekend on Saturday, Apr. 22 at 12 pm at Endicott in CCC action.
