Baseball: Hawks Split Double-Header, Overcome Defending National Champions

WILLIMANTIC, Conn.—The Roger Williams baseball team split the double-header to the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State. The Hawks were downed 16-1 in game one. In game two, Roger Williams came out on top, 7-6.

In game one, six Roger Williams pitchers took their turn on the mound. Matt Seminara (Succasunna, N.J.) pitched for 2.0 innings, facing 11 batters and striking one out. Nick Harper (Westwood, N.J.) also pitched for 2.0 innings where he faced 13 batters and struck one batter out. Tommy Turnbach (Brick, N.J.) had 1.1 innings pitched in the game to face 11 batters, striking one out. Brandon Csizmaida (Trumbull, Conn.) pitched 1.2 innings, faced seven batters, allowed one walk, and struck out one batter. James Nichols (Bridgewater, Mass.) had 1.0 innings pitches where he faced four batters and struck three of them out. Dom DeFeo (Kennebunk, Maine) faced three batters from the mound and allowed two walks.

At bat in game one, London Camelo (Bristol, R.I.), Aidan Hawley (Natick, Mass.), Nick Zobian (Califon, N.J.), and Chris Balzano (Saco, Maine) recorded one hit apiece. Hawley added one stolen base. Matt Falvey (Walpole, Mass.) recorded one walk.

Eastern Connecticut began scoring in game one at the bottom of the first. The Warriors went on to score 16 runs before the Hawks were able to score. In the bottom of the eighth with runners on first and third, Alec Lavallee (Cumberland, R.I.) grounded out into double play, allowing Zobian to cross home.

On the mound in game two, Conor Gaughan (Walpole, Mass.) pitched 2.0 innings, faced 10 batters, allowed one walk, and struck one batter out. Louie Mosca (Old Tappan, N.J.) pitched 4.2 innings where he faced 21 batters, struck out two batters. Brett Lauterbach (Fairfield, Conn.) had 1.0 innings pitched, faced five batters, and struck out one batter. Nick Gleason (Northboro, Mass.) pitched 1.1 innings to face five batters and strike out two, allowing one hit.

At bat in game two, Ethan Keeney (Harwich, Mass.) recorded one hit, one run, two runners batted in, and one sacrifice fly. Hawley had four hits and scored three runs. Camelo and Jack Morin (North Andover, Mass.) each added two hits and one double.

Eastern Connecticut were first on the scoreboard, earning two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Warriors scored again in the second inning.

At the top of the third, Falvey hit a single to the left side to bat in one runner. Owen Hibbard (Roxbury, Conn.) came in to score. With runners on second and third, Matt Massaro (Fairfield, Conn.) hit a sacrifice fly to right field for Keeney to score.

In the top of the fourth the Hawks had the bases loaded when Hibbard hit a sacrifice fly to bat in one runner. Camelo scored a run for Roger Williams, knotting things up, 3-3. Hawley scored a run on a sacrifice fly hit by Keeney to pull the Hawks ahead, 4-3. A run scored by the Warriors in the bottom of the fourth tied the score going into the next inning.

In the fifth inning, Camelo and Hawley scored one run apiece for Roger Williams to take the lead again. In the bottom of the fifth, Eastern Connecticut State scored when the batter grounded out into double play, the Warriors trailing the Hawks, 6-5.

Eastern Connecticut earned a run in the bottom of the seventh, evening out the score, 6-6.

In the top of the ninth, Hawley stole third base. A pick off attempt by the catcher was wild, allowing Hawley to score the winning run.

Roger Williams (11-20, 7-5 CCC) will be back in action on Saturday, April 29 for a double-header at Nichols starting at 11:30 am. They then host Wheaton on Sunday, April 30.
