BRISTOL, R.I.—The Roger Williams baseball team was defeated by UMass Boston on Thursday evening in non-conference play on Paolino Field, 10-6.
On the mound,
Lucas Lariviere (Cumberland, R.I.) pitched 6.1 innings, facing 28 batters, recording seven ground outs, and striking out two batters.
Kevin Blum (New City, N.Y.) pitched 2.0 innings where he faced eight batters and struck out one.
Nick Gleason (Northboro, Mass.) pitched 0.2 innings and struck out one batter.
At bat,
Matt Massaro (Fairfield, Conn.) recorded a triple and had two RBIs.
Matt Falvey (Walpole, Mass.) finished the game with one hit, one stolen base, and two walks.
Nick Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) had two hits, one runner batted in, and two assists.
On the Beacons side, Gianni Zarrilli hit the lone home run of the game while adding two RBIs. Craig Corliss finished the game with one walk and three runners batted in. Breon Parker recorded two hits, one walk, and two RBIs.
In the first inning, UMass Boston brought the runner home after hitting a ball to shortstop,
Mike Bogosian (Cranston, R.I.). The Hawks saw two runs scored in the bottom of the first. At bat, Massaro tripled down the right field line, brining
Owen Hibbard (Roxbury, Conn.) in to home. With the next hit, Massaro was able to score a second run for Roger Williams.
The Beacons gained another run in the top of the second. With the bases loaded, Mike Gorham hit a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing in Zarrilli to score. In the bottom of the second, Sheehan hit a double.
Christopher Flynn (Randolph, N.J.) followed suit to hit a double of his own for Sheehan to score a run. Flynn scored off of a bunt by Massaro before the end of the inning.
Repeating the events of the previous inning, UMass Boston scored on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded, bringing the score with Roger Williams just in the lead, 4-3.
In the bottom of the sixth, with
Sam Weigel (Brookfield, Conn.) on second base, Sheehan hit a single out to center field and Weigel came in to score. The Hawks had a 5-3 lead going into the seventh inning.
In the top of the seventh, the Beacons scored five runs. The Hawks did not earn another run until the bottom of the eighth, putting the score at 8-6.
Zarrilli of UMass Boston hit a homer in the top of the ninth, allowing Nick Farnacci to score a run before crossing home plate himself.
Roger Williams (6-13, 5-1 CCC) will be on the road on Saturday, April 8 for a double-header at Wentworth. The Hawks will host Johnson & Wales on Tuesday, April 11.
