BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's tennis team picked up an 8-1 victory over the Bears of Bridgewater State at the Dr. Henry Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts in non-conference action.
The Hawks picked up a pair of wins in doubles action, with
Izzy Pecora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and
Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.) being the first to finish in No. 3 doubles with an 8-3 victory. The No. 1 doubles duo of
Gianna Ferraro (Westerly, R.I.) and
Alessia Cahoon (Dedham, Mass.) added another point with an 8-4 win. The Bears cut into the Roger Williams lead with a hard-fought No. 2 doubles match going in favor of Allison Carter and Meghan Lotti, 8-7 (7-4), in a tiebreaker.
In singles play, Roger Williams saw Cahoon and
Gracie McCarthy (Marion, Mass.) earn straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 4 singles respectively, putting the Hawks within one point of clinching the match. Mancini then picked up the clinching point with a 6-3, 6-2 win in No. 6 singles.
After clinching the match, the Hawks went on to see
Olivia Santoro (Cheshire, Conn.) pick up an 3-6, 6-3, 10-2 win in No. 5 singles, with Pecora winning her match at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-1. The No. 1 singles match also went in favor of Roger Williams, 6-1, 4-6, 10-4, completing the sweep of the Bears in singles play.
Roger Williams (6-2, 0-1 CCC) are slated to host Suffolk on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 12:00 pm on the RWU Tennis Courts for a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest. The Hawks will then visit Newport on Monday, Sept. 25 at 3:00 pm to take on Salve Regina.
