BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University field hockey team took down Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent Western New England on Saturday, defeating the Golden Bears, 4-0.
Western New England came into the match unbeaten on the year with a 9-0 record, falling to 9-1 on the season and 1-1 within CCC play.
The Hawks out shot the Golden Bears 24-3 in the match, with the Hawks posting 13 shots on target. Roger Williams also had 14 penalty corners in the match to Western New England's four.
Kelly Doherty (Mansfield, Mass.) had a pair of goals in the matchup, while
Grace Rocheleau (West Hartford, Conn.) accounted for three points with a goal and an assist.
Elizabeth Duquette (Pittsford, N.Y.) had a goal in the match off of three shots on target.
In the opening 30 seconds of the match, the Hawks earned a penalty stroke opportunity, with Duquette being tasked to take it. Duquette's opportunity was saved by the Golden Bear goalkeeper. The two teams were both scoreless in the opening stanza of the match.
In the second quarter, Roger Williams took the lead when a bouncing ball found the stick of Rocheleau, who fired the ball past the Western New England defense, taking a 1-0 lead. After Duquette put a shot on target that was saved, Rocheleau collected the ball, finding Doherty open by the net for a goal with 31 seconds remaining in the first half.
After the break, the Hawks dominated play on the offensive end, holding the Golden Bears without a shot attempt in the quarter. In the fourth, the Hawks struck twice again, with Duquette scoring on a penalty stroke, before Doherty added another tally to secure the victory.
Roger Williams (8-2, 2-0 CCC) will take on Plymouth State on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 4:00 pm in New Hampshire. The Hawks will then host Nichols in a CCC match on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 3:00 pm on Bayside Field.
