BEVERLY, Mass. – The Roger Williams University men's soccer team fell to Endicott in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon, 2-1, at Hempstead Stadium.
The Hawks out shot the Gulls 16-12, but Endicott put six of their attempts on target to Roger Williams five. Both teams saw their goalkeepers make four saves, with the Hawks trailing in corner kicks.
Jack Avellar (Orleans, Mass.) played the entire game for the Hawks in goal, with
Will Schiffer (Cotuit, Mass.) leading with two shots on goal.
Tommy Bowen (Manchester, Mass.),
Niall Shea (Portsmouth, R.I.) and
CJ Sousa (Fall River, Mass.) each had a shot on goal in the match.
Endicott scored the first goal of the match in the seventh minute, when Conor Rooney controlled the ball off his chest, before finding Max Karkos for the shot into the lower right side of the net. The Gulls scored again in the 13
th minute when Tiago Frazao collected the ball in front of the net, putting the ball in the bottom right corner.
The Hawks had three shots on target in the half, but were unable to get one by the Gulls goalkeeper.
In the second half, the Hawks finally broke through with Shea headed a ball into the back of the net, after receiving a long throw in from Sousa. The Hawks would be held off the scoreboard the remainder of the match, with the Gulls holding on for the victory.
Roger Williams (2-3-5, 0-1-1 CCC) will take on WPI Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 7:00 pm at H. Carr Field in Worcester. The Hawks will then host Western New England on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 12:00 pm for a CCC match on Bayside Field.
