Women’s Tennis: Roger Williams Outlast Saint Anselm in 5-4 Thriller

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's tennis team picked up a win over NCAA Division II foe Saint Anselm, 5-4, on Monday afternoon on the RWU Tennis Courts.
 
In doubles play, Saint Anselm took the first point of the match with an 8-3 win by Camila Heredia-Osante and Julia Svor in No. 2 doubles. Saint Anselm then took a point in the top doubles pairing, with Irene Garbo and Abby Svor edging out Gianna Ferraro (Westerly, R.I.) and Alessia Cahoon (Dedham, Mass.), 8-6.
 
The Hawks responded by taking an 8-4 win with the No. 3 doubles pairing of Izzy Pecora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.) earning the victory, closing out doubles action with Roger Williams trailing, 2-1.
 
In singles action, Garbo picked up the first point of singles play, with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the top singles spot, before Olivia Santoro (Cheshire, Conn.) scored a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles, putting the score at 3-2.
 
Saint Anselm picked up another point in No. 2 singles, before Pecora scored a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Abby Svor on the No. 3 singles court. Mancini picked up a key 6-2, 6-0 win I No. 6 singles setting up a winner takes all final in the No. 4 singles match.
 
After being down 5-4 in the first set, McCarthy rallied of three straight games for Roger Williams, taking the first set 7-5. In the second set McCarthy jumped out to a 4-1 lead, before Julia Svor, cut the lead down to one with two straight game wins.  The match came to a close as McCarthy defeated Julia Svor, 7-5, 6-4.
 
Roger Williams (2-0, 0-0 CCC) will host Regis on Thursday, Sept. 7 at 4:00 pm, before receiving back-to-back visits from New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foes Wheaton and Emerson on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 12:00 pm and Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 3:30 pm respectively.
