Men’s Basketball: Hawks Edge Out Gulls In Final Seconds of CCC Thriller

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Roger Williams University men's basketball team outlasted Endicott on Wednesday evening in MacDonald Gymnasium, 93-90, using four final second free throws to edge out the Gulls in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.
 
Mac Annus (Belmont, Mass.) scored 23 points with a 7-15 shooting performance, with two rebounds, a pair of assists, and a steal.  Annus also knocked down five shots from distance in the contest. John Ah Kao (Dumont, N.J.) added 19 in the contest, with five rebounds, while Finn Miller (Stamford, Conn.) had 18 points with eight rebounds and four assists, a block and a steal. Phillip Sughrue (Winchester, Mass.) also scored in double figures with 15.
 
Jalen Echevarria had a game high 29 points for Endicott, going 13-23 from the floor with Elijah Kinney added 21 in the contest. Mark Barrett had 12 points with three rebounds, and five assists in the matchup.
 
Endicott jumped out to an early, 7-0 lead after Elijah Kinney knocked down a three, 57 seconds into the game, but Sughrue answered with a three of his own to put Roger Williams on the board. Trailing 15-8, the Hawks then had Annus knock down a three and Sughrue add a point at the free throw line to cut the deficit down to two.
 
With 6:20 remaining in the half, the Hawks cut the lead down to one, with Annus knocking down another three in the frame. Endicott extended their lead to as many as 12 in the half, but Roger Williams was able to shrink the lead down to nine at the end of the half, with Ah Kao hitting a three to end the half with the Hawks trailing, 44-35.
 
At the start of the second half, Roger Williams cut the deficit to as few as three with 13:19 remaining with Annus knocking down another three. The Hawks were able to retake the lead with Nate Lopes (Scituate, Mass.) knocking down a three pointer of his own with 12 minutes remaining to take the Hawks first lead of the game.
 
Endicott retook the lead with 9:20 remaining when Jalen Echevarria knocked down a three for the Gulls. With 1:33 remaining in the half, Ty Vitko hit a three to extend the Endicott lead to five. Roger Williams was able to cut the lead down to three with 51 seconds remaining with a layup from Lopes, 88-85. A jumper from Echevarria with 20 seconds remaining gave Endicott another five-point lead, before Sughrue finished at the rim for a layup with 11 seconds remaining.
 
After a missed free throw by the Gulls, Roger Williams earned a pair of attempts, with Sughrue putting both through the hoop with 3.2 seconds remaining. As the Gulls put the ball into play, the pass went long, going out of bounds, giving Roger Williams the ball back with 3.2 on the clock. After a technical foul was called, Annus went ot the line knocking down both shots to take the lead. Roger Williams then inbounded the ball knocking down both free throws to secure the win.
 
Roger Williams (9-7, 7-1 CCC) will host Suffolk on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 3:00 pm before traveling to face Western New England on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 7:30 pm. The Hawks will then host Curry on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 3:00 pm for Senior Day.
