WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Roger Williams University women's basketball team completed the season sweep of the University of Hartford on Wednesday evening, at Chase Family Arena, 61-49.
With the win, Head Coach
Kelly Thompson earned her 250th career victory as a head coach, and 242nd leading Roger Williams.
Hartford who is currently in their first year as a reclassifying Division III institution now trails 2-0 all-time to Roger Williams. As a reclassifying institution to Division III, contests played against Hartford will not be recognized by the Conference as intra-conference contests.
Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.) led the Hawks with 20 points, with a pair of rebounds, two assists, and a steal on 8-10 shooting from the floor, going 4-5 from the free throw line.
Lilli Clark (Willimantic, Conn.) had 11 points, and 13 rebounds, with an assist in the contest, while
Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) had nine points with six rebounds and a steal.
Elizabeth Dufrane (Falls Church, Va.) added 11 points with four assists coming off the bench.
Roger Williams opened up scoring on their first possession when, Galligan finished on a layup, 39 seconds into the contest, jumping out to a six-point lead before McCoy put in the first bucket for Hartford. Roger Williams went up by 11 points after Dufrane found Galligan for the lay in. Hartford was able to cut into the lead, but trailed 17-7 heading into the second.
In the second frame, Hartford cut the lead down to four with 6:03 remaining in the opening half, but Roger Williams responded with an 8-3 run to end the half, going into the break leading, 27-18.
Coppola knocked down a three to start the second half for Roger Williams, extending their lead to 15 with 7:24 remaining after
Meg Qualey (Woburn, Mass.) capped off a 6-0 run with a pair of free throws. The third quarter ended with Roger Williams outscoring Hartford, 14-12 over the final 6:20, trailing 45-34, into the final frame.
Hartford was able to cut the lead down to six in the final quarter, but the Hawks went on to expand their lead back out for the win, with Galligan scoring 10 of Roger Williams' 16 points in the final frame, .
Roger Williams (13-7, 8-3 CCC) will take on Gordon on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 1:00 pm, before hosting Endicott on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 5:30 pm in the Campus Rec Center. The Hawks will close out the week in Biddeford, Maine, taking on the University of New England at 1:00 pm.
