BRISTOL, R.I. – Mac Annus scored a game-high 20 points in the contest, with
John Ah Kao scoring 19, as the Roger Williams University defeated Hartford in the first ever meeting between the two men's basketball programs, 74-61.
Annus pulled down five rebounds in the contest, going 8-19 from the floor, with a pair of assists.
Finn Miller also scored in double figures, tallying 15 points, with six rebounds, and five assists.
Sean Gogolin led the team with 10 rebounds, going 4-6 from the floor for nine points, with a pair of blocks and a steal.
Hartford was paced offensively by Trayon Rumley who scored 13 points, going 6-11 from the field, with a pair of rebounds, block, and a steal. Jaylen Brown added 11 points coming off the bench, with two steals, and Henry Herman had nine points, with five rebounds. Kaosi Chijoke had six points, pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds, with three blocks.
Roger Williams held the edge in points off turnovers, 18-13, second chance points, 12-7, and fast break scoring, 14-4. Hartford's bench was a potent weapon in the game scoring 25 points.
The two teams were even throughout the opening 10 minutes of play, with neither team gaining any traction. Roger Williams then saw Miller finish on a layup, sparking a 12-2 run, putting Roger Williams up 33-22. A pair of layups by Hartford cut the lead down to seven, but Miller knocked down a three with 3:57 to expand the lead back to double-digits. Roger Williams led at the break, 42-29.
Roger Williams led 52-38 with 14:59 remaining, before Hartford cut the lead down to six with 3:54 remaining after Rumley knocked down a jumper. The Hawks were able to extend the lead back out to 13 as they closed out the win.
Roger Williams (7-7, 5-1 CCC) will host the University of New England on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 3:00 pm in the Campus Rec Center, before traveling to MacDonald Gymnasium to face Endicott, Wednesday, Jan. 17.
