BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's tennis team defeated Gordon, 5-2, in a Tuesday afternoon match on the RWU Tennis Courts in a Conference of New England (CNE) contest.
The doubles portion of the match went in favor of Roger Williams, who tallied the point from doubles play.
Izzy Pecora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and
Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.) first earned their win at No. 2 doubles with a 6-3 victory over the Fighting Scots' Chloe Hanley and Gianna Hallam.
Gracie McCarthy (Marion, Mass.) and
Gabrielle Petroniro (Wolcott, Conn.) earned the clinching point at No. 3 doubles, 6-3.
Gianna Ferraro (Westerly, R.I.) and
Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador) also won their match at No. 1 doubles over Annette Kim and Serena Ross, 7-6 (7-5).
In singles action, Ferraro defeated Ross 6-2, 6-1, but Annette Kim answered back for Gordon, with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Pecora. After
Adriana Palmieri (Southington, Conn.) earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles put the Hawks up 3-0, Mancini clinched the match with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 come-from-behind victory over Makayla Otey.
In the No. 3 singles match, Abarca earned a 6-2, 6-4 win, before Hallam defeated Petronioro 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 giving the Fighting Scots their second point of the match.
Roger Williams (8-2, 2-1 CNE) will host Salve Regina on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 3:00 pm on the RWU Tennis Courts. The Hawks will then travel to Endicott on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 12:00 pm before hosting Curry on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 3:30 pm.
