BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's tennis team defeated Salve Regina, 6-1, in the latest edition of the two squad's in-state rivalry on Wednesday at the RWU Tennis Courts.
The Hawks are now 33-19 all-time against the Seahawks, holding a winning streak of eight matches.
In doubles action, the Hawks swept to earn the point.
Izzy Pecora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and
Adriana Palmieri (Southington, Conn.) combined for a 6-0 sweep, before
Gianna Ferraro (Westerly, R.I.) and
Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador) earned a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles to clinch the point.
Gracie McCarthy (Marion, Mass.) and
Gabrielle Petroniro (Wolcott, Conn.) had a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles closing out the portion of play.
In singles play, Ferraro earned a 6-2, 6-0 win at the top singles sport, before Abarca defeated Madigan Murphy, 6-2, 6-2, putting the Hawks a point away from clinching. Kaydin Pinto earned the lone point for Salve Regina, defeating Pecora 6-0, 3-6, 10-5. The clinching point came from
Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.) who earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles over Sadie Rieg.
The match rounded out with a 6-0, 6-1 win by Petroniro, before Palmieri picked up the final point of the match with a 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 victory.
Roger Williams (9-2, 2-1 CNE) will travel to face Endicott on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 12:00 pm, before facing off at Curry on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 3:30 pm. The Hawks will host Western New England on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 4:00 pm before turning their attention to the Conference of New England (CNE) Tournament that begins on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
