BRISTOL, R.I – The Roger Williams field hockey team dominated Nichols, winning 7-1 and improving their record to 12-5 overall, and 3-1 in conference.
The scoring barrage began at the seven-minute mark in the first period when
Maddy Monahan (Bristol, N.H.) dropped in her 13
th goal of the season. Senior captain
Ella Waryas (Foxboro, Mass.) scored another for the Hawks in the first period, on a feed from junior
Chelsea King (Schenectady, N.Y.).
The Hawks kept their foot on the gas in the second quarter, piling on three more goals, scored by
Emma Sheldon (Suffield, Conn.),
Lauren Costanzo (North Andover, Mass.), and
Caroline Freeman (Falmouth, Mass.), respectively.
Anna Kruggel (Scituate, Mass.) contributed an assist on Sheldon's goal, her second assist of the season. Roger Williams headed to the half with a commanding 5-0 lead, putting the game out of reach.
To begin the second half, senior
Lauren Costanzo netted her second goal of the game, and sixth of her season, extending the Roger Williams lead to 6-0. Costanzo's goal would be the only scoring that would take place in the third period.
In the fourth quarter, each team would find the goal, as first it was
Abigail Stevens (Brewster, Mass.) from
Chelsea King for the Hawks. The goal brought the lead to 7-0, until Sofia Calabro of Nichols snapped the shutout and contributed a goal of her own for the Bison. The final score was 7-1 in favor of the Hawks, giving them their third win in Conference of New England action.
Roger Williams will take on Connecticut College in non-conference action in their next bout. The game will be on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 7:00 PM on Bayside Field.
