BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University field hockey team defeated Connecticut College, 2-0, in non-conference action on Tuesday evening on Bayside Field.
The Hawks and Camels played to a draw in shot attempts with both teams recording 11 each. The Hawks were able to win the shots on goal battle however, with eight to Connecticut College's five. The Hawks also held a 10-5 edge in penalty corners.
Elizabeth Duquette (Pittsford, N.Y.) and
Hannah Timbrouck (Kingston, N.Y.) scored the goals for the Hawks, while
Chelsea King (Schenectady, N.Y.) and
Abigail Stevens (Brewster, Mass.) each had a pair of shots on goal.
Jill Haudenshield (Sykesville, Md.) made five saves in net for the Hawks. Liz Winemaster had five saves in the matchup, with Sadie Gearan earning a defensive save.
After only one shot was allowed in the first quarter, the two team's offenses came alive in the second. The teams combined for seven shots and five corners in the period, with the Hawks scoring on a shot by Duquette with 21 seconds remaining in the half, after an outlet pass by
Anna Kruggel (Scituate, Mass.), was sent into the zone. The two squads were tied in shots, with the Hawks holding a 3-2 edge in penalty corners.
In the 43
rd minute of play, the Hawks were able to sneak a ball by the Camel goalkeeper, but the goal was called back after the official had called for a penalty corner. The Camels defense stood tall, holding the Hawks out of the net in the third.
In the final frame, the Hawks scored insurance, when King crossed a ball to Timbrouck who tipped in the shot to seal the victory.
Roger Williams (12-5, 3-1 CNE) will host Conference of New England (CNE) foe University of New England on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1:00 pm on Bayside Field to close out their home contests of their regular season slate. The Hawks will then face off against #3 Tufts on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 1:00 pm in Medford, closing out the regular season. CNE Tournament play will begin on Wednesday, Nov. 6 with the semifinals.
