BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams field hockey team defeated the University of New England (UNE) 3-0 in Conference of New England Action (CNE). The win against the Nor'easters is the first time in program history the Hawks have defeated them, snapping a 20-loss streak that dates back to 2013.
Roger Williams got on the board early in this one, as
Elizabeth Duquette (Pittsford, N.Y.) netted her eighth goal of the season, good for third best on the team.
Chelsea King (Schenectady, N.Y.) provided the assist for Duquette, her 12
th of the season, good for the team lead. In total, Roger Williams fired off five shots to UNE's one in the first period, as they closed the frame with a 1-0 lead. In the second quarter, neither team was able to find the back of the net. Roger Williams fired off another five shots on goal to UNE's one once again. Roger Williams headed into the half with a 1-0 lead.
To begin the second period,
Elizabeth Duquette was awarded a penalty shot which she was able to cash in on to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead. The goal was Duquette's second of the game and ninth on the season. In the period, the Hawks prevented the Nor'easters from getting a shot on a goal.
Maddy Monahan (Bristol, N.H.) put the final touch on the victory, netting her 14
th goal on the season, which is good for second of the team. The goal expanded the Hawks lead to 3-0, putting the game out of reach.
Roger Williams (14-5, 4-1 CNE) will be right back in action tomorrow, Oct. 26 against Tufts University. It will be the final game of the regular season for the Hawks.
