BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University field hockey team trailed at halftime of their Conference of New England (CNE) matchup against Endicott, tying the match after halftime, before eventually falling 3-2 to the Gulls.
Endicott was out shot 23-7, with the Hawks putting 10 shots on target. Roger Williams also held a 16-7 advantage in corners, while only picking up one card to the Gulls three.
The Gulls had three different goal scorers in the match, with Casey Halliday and Reagan Hicks earning assists. Faith Minickene had seven saves in the match, backstopping the Gulls to the win.
Chelsea King (Schenectady, N.Y.) had five shots on goal in the match, while
Maddy Monahan (Bristol, N.H.) put a pair on cage for the Hawks. King and
Hannah Timbrouck (Kingston, N.Y.) picked up the goals for Roger Williams, while
Hannah Brazil (East Sandwich, Mass.) picked up her first loss of the season in cage, making six saves.
The Gulls opened up scoring in the match 3:28 into the match. With Hicks connecting on a pass to Casey Halliday of a corner for the first Endicott goal. The Hawks had an opportunity to level the score in the second quarter, with Riley Perkins making a defensive save after a shot by King went high over the shoulder of Minickene, pulling the shot down with her stick.
At the half the Hawks led in shots, 8-4, while Endicott had the advantage in shots on goal 4-3. Roger Williams also led in penalty corners 8-4, doubling up the Gulls in the category. Despite the advantage, the Gulls led at halftime, 1-0, blocking four of the Hawks eight shots.
Roger Williams leveled the match in the third, with Timbrouck firing a shot on goal, that was deflected in by King to score just under five minutes into the half. The Hawks had a pair of player up opportunities coming off green cards but were unable to score. Shortly after the second card expired, 1:54 into the fourth quarter, Swanson scored off a blast from Halliday, deflecting the shot from Halliday into the cage, for a 2-1 Gull lead.
The Gulls added another goal with 4:38 remaining after a penalty in the scoring area led to a penalty stroke by Riley Perkins. The Hawks would score with time expired, pulling within one goal to end the match, after Monahan's shot from the top of the scoring area found the stick of Timbrouck for the goal.
Roger Williams (7-4, 1-0 CNE) will host UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 4:00 pm on Bayside Field. The Hawks will then travel on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 1:00 pm to face Western New England, before hosting Salve Regina on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7:00 pm for Senior Day.
