Field Hockey: Hawks Use Explosive First To Take Down Corsairs

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University field hockey team defeated UMass Dartmouth 7-0 in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon on Bayside Field.

The Hawks outshot the Corsairs 25-6, with 15 shots landing on target, while also winning the penalty corner battle 15-5. Chelsea King (Schenectady, N.Y.) had a pair of goals, with Lauren Costanzo (North Andover, Mass.) and Lily Tobin (Sandwich, Mass.) each adding a goal.

The Hawks opened the contest with a goal 1:17 into the contest, when Ella Waryas (Foxboro, Mass.) put a pass across the Corsair defense, that King then deflected for a goal. A few minutes later, Hannah Timbrouck (Kingstown, N.Y.) was the one to score on an assist by Maddy Monahan (Bristol, N.H.)  coming off a corner by Monahan. Monahan scored a goal at with 9:32 remaining in the opening quarter before the Hawks secured a 4-0 lead after a goal by Tobin off a cross from Costanzo to round out the opening frame.

After a scoreless second quarter, the Hawks had a 10-1 advantage in shots, while also leading in shots on target, 7-1. The Hawks had eight penalty corners to the Corsairs one.

In the second half, Emma Sheldon (Suffield, Conn.) had a goal off an assist from King in the third, but King then scored in the fourth after Elizabeth Duquette (Pittsford, N.Y.) found King for the goal, and Costanzo after a pass by Katie Flanagan (Madison, Conn.) to close out the match.

Roger Williams (7-5, 1-1 CNE) will face off against Conference of New England (CNE) foe Western New England on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 1:00 pm in Springfield. The Hawks will then host in-state rival Salve Regina in non-conference action on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7:00 pm for Senior Day.
