BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's tennis team was named the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Conference of New England (CNE) Tournament, defeating the Golden Bears of Western New England, 7-0, Wednesday afternoon.
The Hawks opened the match, sweeping all three doubles matches, 6-0.
Gianna Ferraro (Westerly, R.I.) and
Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador) finished their match at the top spot ahead of
Izzy Pecora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and
Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.) who earned the clinching match for the doubles point.
Gracie McCarthy (Marion, Mass.) and
Gabrielle Petroniro (Wolcott, Conn.) also earned a win at No.3 doubles.
In singles play, Abarca defeated Sydney Shepard, 6-0, 6-0, before McCarthy defeated Leina Salomon, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot. Mancini clinched the match at No. 4 singles defeating her opponent with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep.
At No. 5 singles,
Adriana Palmieri (Southington, Conn.) earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Gabrielle Tirkot, ahead of Ferraro finishing her match 6-1, 6-2, ahead of Pecora closing out the match at No.2 singles with a similar 6-1, 6-2 score.
Following the match, the team celebrated McCarthy and Ferraro who are competing in their senior campaign.
After a three-way tie forced a coin-toss to decide the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 seeds for the upcoming CNE Tournament, Gordon was awarded the No. 2 seed, with Endicott earning the No. 3 over Roger Williams with their win in the regular season.
Roger Williams (11-3, 4-2 CNE) will host No. 5 Curry in the First Round of the CNE Tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 4:00 pm on the RWU Tennis Courts.
