Women’s Volleyball: Hawks Fall in Five at Wentworth Wednesday

BOSTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team fell to Wentworth in five sets, 3-2 (20-25, 25-27, 26-24, 30-28, 15-9), in Conference of New England (CNE) action in Tansey Gymnasium.
 
The Hawks hit .174 as a team while the Leopards hit .199 throughout the match. The Leopards 63 kills edged out Roger Williams by one, while the Hawks had 59 assists to Wentworth's 57. The Hawks also led in blocks, 11-5, service aces, 13-10, and digs, 76-74.
 
Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) had 25 ills in the match, setting a career-high in the loss, while Angela West (Riverview, Fla.) had 17 kills. Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) led Roger Williams with 51 assists and four service aces while recording a double-double with 11 digs in the match. Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and Kaydence Fish (Bedford, N.H.) each had six blocks in the match. Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) led the team with 15 digs, and Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) added 14.  
 
Kate McLane had 25 kills for Wentworth, while Gianna Cefalu had 47 assists, and Helen Barthe had three aces. Defensively, the Leopards had three blocks from Riley Schoonmaker and Emma Sanders, while Amanda Zweifler had 17 digs.
 
In the opening set, the Hawks jumped out to a 19-13 lead, the Leopards were able to pull within three. The Hawks had a three-point lead before scoring a pair of points, with the Leopards scoring one more point, before the Hawks ended the set.
 
In the second set, the Leopards led 19-13, but Roger Williams responded by scoring nine of the next 11 points, taking a 22-21 lead. The Leopards retook the lead 24-23, but the Hawks responded to force extra points. After the Leopards earned a point, the Hawks then rattled off three straight to take a 2-0 match lead.
 
Wentworth rallied in the third, with the Hawks leading 21-19, the Leopards then were able to climb back, leveling the match at 23-23. Roger Williams scored a point to take a 24-23 advantage, but Barthe provided a pair of kills, and Sanders finished off the set for the Leopards.
 
The fourth set went similarly, as the Hawks held an 18-14 lead, the Leopards scored five of the next seven points to pull within one of Roger Williams. The Hawks led 23-21, but Wentworth again scored three straight points to take a 24-23 advantage. With the two teams playing into extra points, the Hawks led 28-27, but Wentworth scored three straight to secure the set.
 
After the two teams traded sides, with the Hawks leading 8-6, the Leopards scored eight straight points to take a 14-8 advantage. The Hawks scored one more point in the match but were unable to hold on as the McLane registered a kill to end the match.
 
Roger Williams (10-10, 2-2 CNE) will host Norwich on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 1:00 pm for Senior Day.  The Hawks will then host Gordon and Hartford on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 12:00 pm and Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1:00 pm respectively.
