BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team scored 103 points, eclipsing the 100-point mark for the second consecutive game, as they overcame a potent Rivier offense, 103-89, in the RWU Paolino Recreation Center on Saturday.
Mac Annus (Belmont, Mass.) led the way with 29 points in the win, dishing out five assists, with eight rebounds and a steal. First-year
Ryan Hammerlund (Southington, Conn.) tallied 14 points off the bench, playing 15 minutes of action with three rebounds and a steal. RWU had five players in double figures for scoring, with
Finn Miller (Stamford, Conn.),
Nate Lopes (Scituate, Mass.), and
Will MacDonald (York, Maine) each reaching the double-digit plateau.
River saw a pair score 22 or more points in the tilt, with Kyle Bosse and Joey Merrill finishing with 23 and 22 respectively. Bosse also pulled down a team-high six rebounds in the matchup, with Ra'Quan Groves blocking a pair of shots, and Robenson Baguidy earning a block.
Roger Williams won the points in the paint battle 4-44, with 20 Hawk points coming off turnovers. The RWU bench outscored Rivier's bench 35-8. Roger Williams shot 62.1 percent from the field while knocking down 60 percent from three-point range.
Merrill scored the opening bucket of the game for the Raiders before the Hawks answered with a lay-in by Annus. The two teams played tight throughout the entirety of the opening half, with both teams holding only at most a four-point lead. RWU led 49-48, after a pair of free throws fell for Annus, but Baguidy knocked down a three with two seconds remaining in the half to take a 51-49 lead into the break.
Rivier picked up where they left off, with Matt Constant drilling a three with 13 seconds into the half, taking their largest lead of the game, 54-49. The Hawks then took control throughout the second half, taking the lead with a layup by Miller with 17:03 remaining in regulation. The two teams would stay tight, with the Hawks holding the lead throughout, until a layup by Annus with 12:16 remaining sparked a 7-0 stretch giving the Hawks a double-digit advantage.
Roger Williams extended their lead to as many as 15 in the game, cruising to the win late in the matchup.
Roger Williams (2-1, 0-0 CNE) will travel to Framingham State on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 6:00 pm for a matchup with the Rams. The Hawks will then host Wheaton on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 3:30 pm in the Campus Rec Center before Thanksgiving Break.
