Box Score The Roger Williams women's basketball team fell to Smith College 63-50 in their final game of the Smith Holiday Tournament. The loss brings the women to a 1-1 record at the tournament and 6-4 overall on the season.
Smith was able to jump out to a 21-11 lead to begin the afternoon, in part due to their hot shooting from three-point range. The Pioneers shot 5-8 from distance in the first quarter, helping them jump out to the 10-point lead. The Hawks were able to play the opponent close to even in the second quarter, with Smith just outscoring the Hawks 16-14 in the frame. The Pioneers headed into half with a 12-point lead. The second half was more of the same, as the Hawks were unable to cut into the double-digit deficit, giving Smith the 63-50 win.
Individually, the Hawks were led by E. Dufrane (Falls Church, Va.) and
Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.), as they were the only Hawks to reach double digits in the game, scoring 12 and 11 respectively. Coppola added a team-high nine rebounds as well. Ally Landau paced the Pioneers in the victory, scoring a game-high 22 points on 6-9 shooting from three-point distance. Virginia Johnson chipped in a game-high 13 rebounds for Smith as well.
The Hawks will travel back home to take on Suffolk in their next matchup, bringing them back into Conference of New England action. They will look to improve on their 3-0 conference record on Jan. 4.
