BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's basketball team defeated Wentworth, 64-39, on Wednesday in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tilt in the RWU Campus Rec Center.
Prior to the game, the Hawks honored
Caroline Elie (Rockland, Mass.) and
Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.) who will be graduating in May.
Galligan led all scorers with 17 points, going 8-for-14 on the day with a pair of rebounds, four assists, and a block.
Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) also chipped in double-figure scoring with 12 points and shooting 50 percent from the floor with five rebounds, an assist, and a block.
Meg Qualey (Woburn, Mass.) was responsible for nine points with three rebounds and three steals.
Lilli Clark (Willimantic, Conn.) and
Abrielle Racine (Mooers Forks, N.Y.) both closed out their day with six points.
Gabby Amoddio had 12 points to lead the Leopards, with seven rebounds, and an assist. Reagan Madonia had six points for Wentworth with Samantha Jones and Gianna Gioia each had five.
Amoddio started scoring off for the Leopards finishing a layup in the paint, before Coppola responded with three, two possessions later with Coppola knocking down a three. Clark knocked down a jumper to take a 5-3 advantage, before Amoddio found the paint again to cut the lead down to one. Roger Williams jumped out to a 9-4 lead with 5:03 remaining in the first. The Hawks led 13-8 with 2:23 remaining in the first, but Wentworth scored four straight points before Coppola knocked down a jumper to expand the lead to 15-12 at the end of the half.
With the two teams being knotted up at 17-17, Galligan put in a jumper to spark an 8-1 run taking a 25-18 lead. The Leopards got two back before Coppola and Richardson hit free throws to take a seven-point lead into the break.
Leading by nine, the Hawks opened up a 7-2 run in the third quarter with Galligan sparking the run with a layup, the Hawks would enter the fourth up 14.
Roger Williams would break the game open in the fourth doubling up the Leopards, 22-11, in the frame as they held off the win.
Roger Williams (16-8, 11-4 CCC) will travel to take on Nichols on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1:00 pm. The Hawks will then await the bracket for the CCC Tournament for their CCC First Round matchup on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at a time to be determined.
