Women's Basketball: Hawks 22 Point First Quarter Proves Decisive in CCC Win Over Gulls

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's basketball team defeated Endicott, 67-62, on Tuesday evening in the RWU Campus Rec Center in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.
 
The Hawks were led by Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) who put together a stat line of 15 points on 5-9 shooting from the field, with six rebounds, three assists, and three steals, as well as a pair of blocks. Katie Galligan had 14 points with seven rebounds and four assists, along with a pair of blocks and two steals on the defensive end. Lilli Clark chipped in 14 points with seven rebounds, going 6-9 from the floor, and Elizabeth Dufrane scored 12 points coming off the bench.
 
Sarah Dempsey had a game-high 25 points for the Gulls, with Cora Nadeau adding 14 points. Dempsey also had an additional four rebounds, with three blocks and four steals in the game. Libby Fleming added a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
 
The Hawks scored the first four points to open the contest, before Nadeau put in a bucket for Endicott. With the score tied 10-10 with 5:37 remaining in the opening stanza, the Haws offense erupted scoring 12 of their 22 first quarter points unanswered in the frame.
 
The Hawks were able to maintain a double digit lead heading into the halftime break, leading 40-29.
 
In the second half, the Hawks led 53-42 with just under 30 seconds remaining in the third, before Fleming finished a layup for the Gulls, cutting the Roger Williams' lead to single digits at the start of the fourth quarter.
 
In the fourth quarter, the Gulls scored nine of the first 11 points of the quarter, cutting the Hawks' lead down to two with 7:23 remaining, but Roger Williams answered with a layup by Galligan with 6:51 remaining to break the run. The Hawks went on to score the next six points to regain an eight point lead with 4:20 remaining in the contest. The Gulls cut the lead down to as few as three, but the Hawks held on for a five point win.
 
Roger Williams (15-7, 10-3 CCC) will travel to face the University of New England on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 1 pm, before hosting Wentworth on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 5:30 pm for Senior Day.
