DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Roger Williams University baseball team defeated the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College on Tuesday, picking up their fifth straight win to begin the season at Russmatt Tournament, at Northeast Regional Park, 19-6.
This was the first meeting all time between the two programs.
Owen Hibbard (Roxbury, Conn.) went 4-for-4 at the dish, with three RBIs and a walk, and came across to score twice in the contest.
Christopher Flynn (Randolph, N.J.) went 2-for-2 on the day with four RBIs and a pair of walks, with a pair of doubles and a sacrifice bunt.
Jack Morin (North Andover, Mass.) added a pair of hits and four RBIs with
Nick Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) earning a pair of hits and three RBIs.
Danny Powers (Mansfield, Mass.) picked up the win in the contest, coming in in relief going 1.2 innings, without allowing a batter to reach.
After the Knights went three up and three down, the Hawks put up runs in the bottom of the first, after Flynn advanced
Aidan Hawley (Natick, Mass.) to second on a sacrifice bunt, Hawley moved to third on a wild pitch.
London Camelo (Bristol, R.I.) then put a ball into left field, deep enough to allow Hawley to come across to score on the sacrifice fly. With Morin and
Rory Lynch (Easton, Mass.) reaching, Hibbard then smacked a ball into right field, after being misplayed scoring two, taking a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Hawks added a run with runners on first and second, Hibbard picked up his first RBI with Flynn coming around the bag to score on a single through the third base and shortstop gap. Mount Saint Mary responded in the top of the fourth with three runs to cut the lead back down to one heading into the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth the Hawks erupted scoring 12 runs. With the bases loaded, the Hawks knocked a double to left field to bring in three runs, expanding the lead to 7-4. The inning continued to build out their lead with another pair of runs after, Morin hit a double down the left field line, bringing in Camelo and Flynn. The Hawks led, 12-3 before Flynn hit a double down the right field line to take a 13-3 lead, Morin came up again to score another pair after hitting another double to left. Hibbard then wrapped up the contest with a bases loaded walk to go up, 16-3.
The Knights scored one in the fifth, but Roger Williams scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to close out the contest.
Roger Williams (5-0, 0-0 CCC) will play Springfield on Wednesday, Mar. 13 at 5:00 pm at Lake Myrtle Park before facing Mount St. Joseph on Friday, Mar. 15 at 2:30 pm. The Hawks will then wrap up their trip to Florida on Saturday, Mar. 16 against Worcester State.
