AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Roger Williams University baseball team closed out their Spring Break trip to Florida on Saturday, shutting down the Lancers of Worcester State, 10-1, finishing their nine games in Florida unbeaten.
Lucas Lariviere (Cumberland, R.I.) pitched seven innings, allowing one run on four hits, with 12 strikeouts in the contest, along with a pick off of a runner at second base. Lariviere pitched four innings of three up, three down ball.
JT Gunzy (Danbury, Conn.) closed out the contest going two innings with a pair of hits and three strikeouts.
At the dish, five Hawks collected a pair of hits with
Aidan Hawley (Natick, Mass.),
Jack Morin (North Andover, Mass.),
Dennis Folan (Medfield, Mass.),
Nick Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) and
Ty Cali (Taunton, Mass.) each accomplishing the feat. Folan also recorded an pair of RBIs with Morin, Sheehan, Cali, and
Christopher Flynn (Randolph, N.J.) each adding an RBI.
The contest was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning, when the Hawks offense broke through for five runs in the inning. With Folan reaching on an error by the right fielder, the Hawks began a two-out rally with Sheehan hitting a single through the right side of the infield, bringing in Folan from first. The Hawks added another run with Cali knocking an RBI single up the middle of the infield. A few batters later, the Hawks saw a run come in when
London Camelo (Bristol, R.I.) reached on an error by the Lancers shortstop that threw the first baseman off the bag, taking a 3-0 lead.
Two more runs came in after Morin hit a single to short, with the throw by the shortstop going wide, allowing a pair to score giving Roger Williams a 5-0 lead. The Hawks added another two runs on a bunt single by Sheehan who beat out the throw, but the Lancers' first baseman was unable to hold onto the throw, allowing Hibbard to advance the extra base. A few batters later, Flynn hit a double down the right field line, bringing in Sheehan from second base. A wild pitch then brought in Hawley from third, to close out the inning, 8-0.
The top of the sixth saw the Hawks tally two more runs with Morin on third, Folan hit a ball over the left field wall for the Hawks' seventh home run of the season. The Lancers lone run came in the bottom of the sixth inning when, Anthony Iamarone, hit a ground ball to third, grounding out but bringing in Tyler Smith from third base.
Roger Williams (9-0, 0-0 CCC) will return to Rhode Island, and begin to prepare for a Tuesday, Mar. 19 matchup against WPI at the New England Baseball Complex. The Hawks will then host their home opener on Thursday, Mar. 21 at 3:00 pm against UMass Dartmouth.
