Baseball: Hawks' Rally at WPI Comes Up Short in Offensive Slugfest

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – The Roger Williams University baseball team's ninth inning rally came up short on Tuesday evening at the New England Baseball Complex, falling to WPI, 18-16.

The two teams combined for a total of 34 runs off of 30 hits in the contest. Roger Williams' Ryan Camp (Cheshire, Conn.) picked up the loss in the game, while WPI watched as Dominic Monico pick up the win pitching 1.1 innings of work allowing a pair of hits and three walks with three earned runs.

At the plate for the Hawks, Aidan Hawley (Natick, Mass.) went 3-for-5, coming across to score three times, with a pair of walks. Jack Morin (North Andover, Mass.) also picked up three hits, including a double while having 6 RBIs. Owen Hibbard (Roxbury, Conn.) added a pair of hits and two RBIs, with Nick Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) also getting on base twice with a base hit and stole a base.

Andrew Cash had seven RBIs in the contest for WPI, with the Engineers also hitting five home runs in the contest, two from Cash. Jacob Hand hit two over the outfield fence, while Tommy Burns added one.

After the opening two innings were scoreless, the Hawks were the first team to strike. With runners on first and second, Morin hit a single into right field brining in Hawley from second base, with Christopher Flynn (Randolph, N.J.) standing on third. Hibbard came up two batters later, hitting an RBI double to center field, putting the Hawks up 2-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, WPI responded, scoring seven runs in the inning, including a shot by Cash to right field for a grand slam, capping off the big inning. In the top of the fifth the Hawks got one back, with Dennis Folan (Medfield, Mass.) putting a ball into left center to bring in one.

Roger Williams held WPI scoreless in the bottom half of the fifth before adding three in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to one, 7-6. WPI then tacked on three runs with back-to-back home runs by Hand and Cash, regaining a four-run lead.

In the seventh the Hawks came back to take the lead with Ty Cali (Taunton, Mass.) being hit by a pitch, giving the Hawks an 11-10 lead. WPI again responded with Hand hitting a three run shot to right field to bring in three, before Burns went yard the opposite direction bring in two, taking a 15-11 lead.

The Hawks tacked on three more in the eighth, but WPI did the same to put the score at 18-14 heading into the ninth inning. Roger Williams was able to add a pair of runs in the inning, but the lead was to much as the Engineers held on for the win.

Roger Williams (9-1, 0-0 CCC) will host UMass Dartmouth on Thursday, Mar. 21 at 3:00 pm before hosting the University of Saint Joseph on Friday, Mar. 22 at 3:00 pm. The Hawks are then scheduled to host UMaine-Farmington for a doubleheader on Sunday, Mar. 24.
