Baseball: Hawks Take Home Opener Against UMass Dartmouth

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University baseball team defeated UMass Dartmouth on Thursday afternoon, 6-5, on Paolino Field as the Hawks kicked off their 2024 home slate.

Louie Mosca (Old Tappan, N.J.) moved to 3-0 on the young season, with 6.1 innings of work, giving up six hits, with four earned runs in the contest, while striking out 10. MarkAnthony Glickman (Newbury, Mass.) picked up the save, an inning without allowing a batter to reach.

At the plate, Roger Williams was led by Christopher Flynn (Randolph, N.J.) who went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while coming across home plate twice. Open Hibbard (Roxbury, Mass.) also added a hit in the contest with three runs scored, while Jack Morin (North Andover, Mass.) had a sacrifice bunt for an RBI.

The Hawks scored early, adding two runs in the bottom half of the first, with Flynn reaching on a throwing error by the pitcher, with the throw going wide, Hibbard and Flynn both advanced an extra two bases, with Hibbard coming across to put the Hawks up. After London Camelo (Bristol, R.I.) walked, the Hawks saw Morin put down a sacrifice bunt, brining in Flynn to score.

In the bottom of the second, Roger Williams struck again after Rory Lynch (Easton, Conn.) hit a double to center, Flynn put a ball through the right side of the infield scoring lynch from second base.

After a scoreless third, Roger Williams again tacked on a pair of runs, with Flynn hitting a single to right field bringing Hibbard in after his single to right field. Camelo, the following batter, reached on an error, but the error allowed Flynn to score, giving the Hawks a 5-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the sixth, Hibbard advanced as Camelo was put into a pickle on the way to second base, Hibbard then took off from third advancing home to give Roger Williams a 6-0 advantage.

In the top of the seventh the Corsairs rallied scoring four runs to cut the deficit to two. They then added a run in the top of the eighth with an RBI single up the middle. Leading 6-5 in the top of the ninth, Glickman put down the Corsairs, one-two-three, ending the contest.

Roger Williams (10-1, 0-0 CCC) are scheduled to face UMaine Farmington on Sunday, Mar. 24 at 12:00 pm. The Hawks will then take on Wentworth in their Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener on Tuesday, Mar. 26 at 3:00 pm on Paolino Field.
