MANSFIELD, Conn. - The Roger Williams University men's lacrosse team defeated Eastern Connecticut State, 13-1, on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference match at Rick McCarthy Field.
The Hawks offense was led by Jack Kester (Londonderry, N.H.) who had four points coming from two goals and two assists, Matt Halpin (Hanover, Mass.) who had three points coming from three goals, Matt Hemmert (Braintree, Mass.) added two goals and Riley Spellman (Manchester, N.H.) tallied four points with a pair of goals and two assists. Aaron D'Aversa (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) made 7 saves in the contest and allowed one goal.
For Eastern Connecticut, the Warriors' offense was paced by Brycen Kennedy who had one goal and a ground ball, Quinn O'Connor who assisted the goal with a ground ball and Rick O'Neal who had six ground balls.
Kevin Murphy (Ramsey, N.J.) had one caused turnovers while picking up two ground balls and Kyle Zirn (Chester, N.H.) had one caused turnover while collecting four ground balls.
In the opening quarter the Hawks struck first, scoring 7 and giving up none. The first goal came early at just 1:01 into the contest by Kester. Roger Williams quickly followed up scoring their second goal 4:50 into the contest, with Spellman being responsible for the goal.
Throughout the first and second quarters the Hawks embarked on a 9-0 scoring run. The Warriors goal came near the end of the second quarter with just 5:37 remaining in the second quarter by Kennedy off a pass from O'Connor.
However, the Hawks did not slow down after conceding late into the second quarter. They sparked another 4-0 run to finish the game as they cruised to the victory.
The Hawks took 45 shots throughout the contest while placing 31 on target and capitalizing on 13 of those opportunities.
Eastern Connecticut took 17 shots throughout the contest placing 9 on target and scoring on 1 of those opportunities.
Roger Williams (7-2, 0-0 CCC) will play Curry in their first conference match of the season Wednesday March 27th, at 7PM on Bayside Field. They will then follow with another conference match against the University of New England on Saturday March 30th, at 1PM on Blue Bolt Field in Biddeford, Maine.
