BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University men's lacrosse team defeated Curry 20-8 on Wednesday on Bayside Field to open Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.
Matt Hemmert (Braintree, Mass.) had 10 points with eight goals and two assists, while
Kevin Murphy (Ramsey, N.J.) added seven points with six goals and an assist.
Kyle Zirn (Chester, N.H.) had two caused turnovers with three ground balls, while
Aaron D'Aversa (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) had 18 saves out of the 24 shots that he faced.
The Colonels were the first to strike, when Connor Bryant put the first goal of the contest in 3:28 into the contest.
Matt Halpin (Hanover, Mass.) then tallied a goal, and followed with a second to take a 2-1 lead with 8:41 remaining. The Colonels then added a goal with Stephen Stackhouse scoring a goal to level the contest at 2-2.
The Hawks then rattled off six straight goals with Hemmert scoring four during the stretch, extending into the second quarter. A goal by Alex Ripa cut the Roger Williams lead to five, but Murphy and Hemmert were able to strike three times to take an 11-3 lead at the half.
The Hawks outscored the Colonels 9-5 in the second half, closing out the contest with the win.
Roger Williams (8-2, 1-0 CCC) will travel to the University of New England on Saturday, Mar. 30 at 1:00 pm. The Hawks will then host Wentworth on Wednesday, Apr. 3 at 4:00 pm on Bayside Field.
