Softball: Hawks Sweep Home Opener in Doubleheader Against Coast Guard

BRISTOL, RI. – The Roger Williams University softball team picked up two wins in their doubleheader against Coast Guard Academy, defeating them 6-2, and 8-4, on Wednesday at home on the Paolino Field to start off their season.

In the first game, pitcher Raegan Germano (Old Tappan, NJ.) pitched 4.2 innings and threw six strikeouts for the Hawks picking up the win in this game. Keira Quadros (East Providence, R.I.) 2.1 innings with no walks, runs, or earned runs allowed and two strikeouts.

For the offense, Jamie Wells (Castle Rock, Colo.) started the Hawks off by hitting an RBI allowing Hayley Williams (Vernon, Conn.) to earn the first run of the game. Center fielder Cece Baptista (Central Falls, R.I.) followed up with a double allowing the Hawks to add two more runs to the scoreboard before scoring another coming across to score herself.

The Bears responded with Natalie Beck hitting a triple for Veronika Krystofik to run home and putting her on third base. Shortly after, Isabella Shroyer hit an RBI that got Beck home, scoring a second run for the Bears.

The Hawks scored two more runs in the 6th inning with two RBIs from both Christina Denovellis (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Williams bringing the game to an end at 6-2.

In game two, pitcher Skye Merrow (Hudson, NH.) pitched 5.0 innings with no walks, one earned run and one strikeout earning her the win. Natalie Lundari (Flemington, NJ.) pitched 2.0 innings conceding two runs and two earned runs to the Bears.

On the offensive end of the game, the Hawks started out the game with an RBI from Shannon Starratt (Lake George, N.Y.) leading Williams to score the first run of the game. In the second inning Merrow hit a single into right field allowing Kayleigh O'Connor (Southington, Conn.) to score a second run for the Hawks.

The Hawks continued to shine in the 5th inning with Taylor Howell (Sandwich, Mass.) hitting a sacrifice fly, allowing Starratt to score again and lead the Hawks to a fourth straight run, with RBIs from both Baptista and O'Connor before Merrow singled again with 2 RBIs sending both Baptista and O'Connor home to score two more runs for the Hawks, bringing the score to 7-1.

The Bears attempted to come back within the last two innings, with Gracie Hare hitting 2 RBIs and Emma Behel hitting a ground ball that led to a double play being executed by the defense although Madison Long was able to score during the play. Even still, the Bears were unable to come back with this and fell to the Hawks, 8-4.
