Softball: Hawks Drop Pair to Rhode Island College

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University softball team dropped both games of their Wednesday doubleheader to Rhode Island College, 2-1 and 5-2, on Paolino Field.
 
In game one, Raegen Germano (Old Tappan, N.J.) went 7.0 innings with three hits, and a walk, striking out five with a pair of earned runs and two runs. Taylor Howell (Sandwich, Mass.) and Kelsey Burr (Warwick, R.I.) each had a hit, while Cece Baptista (Central Falls, R.I.) came around to score.
 
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when Baptista was hit by a pitch, reaching base. Baptista then stole second, before an errant throw by the catcher, allowed Baptista to come around third to score.
 
The Anchorwomen added two in the top of the sixth the seal the game, with runners on second and third, with Noelle Simmons hitting a single up the middle, bringing in two runs to win.
 
In game two, Skye Merrow (Hudson, N.H.) went 6.0 innings giving up five runs, with Kiera Quadros (East Providence, R.I.) coming in to close out the matchup. Shannon Starratt (Lake George, N.Y.) had a hit and an RBI, while Baptista added an RBI. Hailey Williams (Vernon, Conn.) and Howell each added a pair of hits.
 
In the bottom of the third the Hawks were the first to strike, with Starratt hitting a double into center field brining in Merrow to score from second. The Anchorwomen then put in a run in the top of the fourth after Taylor Babcock hitting a ball to shortstop, but was able to bring in the runner from third.
 
In the top of the fourth, Katelyn Ashe hit a three-run home run to center field, giving RIC a 4-1 lead. Baptista earned an RBI in the bottom of the sixth but Simmons added another run for the Anchorwomen in the seventh to close out the game.
 
Roger Williams (9-5, 0-0 CCC) will host Nichols on Saturday, Mar. 30 at 12:00 pm for a doubleheader to open Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC), before receiving a visit from Salve Regina on Wednesday, Apr. 3 at 3:30 pm.
