BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University baseball team braved the cold conditions at Paolino Field on Tuesday afternoon to beat Wentworth, 5-2, in the Hawks' first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC)Â game of the year.
Conor Quinlan (Taunton, Mass.) picked up the win on the mound for the Hawks, pitching 5.0 innings while striking out four and allowing two runs, one of which was earned. Nick Gleason (Northboro, Mass.) came in for relief to pick up the save, pitching 4.0 shutout innings without allowing a hit.
The Hawk's offense had six hits on the day, two of which came off the bat of Jack Morin (North Andover, Mass.). He accounted for three RBIs and one run scored. Ty Cali (Taunton, Mass.) had a multi-hit day, and Aidan Hawley (Natick, Mass.) scored two runs and had one hit in the game.
Wentworth started the scoring off in the first inning with a sacrifice fly to center, giving the Leopards the first run of the game and a 1-0 lead.
The Hawks' first run came in the third inning. After a steal by Hawley moved him to third base, Morin hit a fly ball to right, deep enough for Hawley to tag up and tie the game.
The Leopards took the lead back in the fourth inning. An error on a hit to second base allowed a run to score, and Wentworth took a 2-1 lead.
A fifth inning rally by the Hawks was what eventually led to their victory. Christopher Flynn (Randolph, N.J.) hit a ball to third base, which there was an error on and allowed Rory Lynch (Easton, Conn.) to score and tie the game. In the next at-bat, Morin doubled down the left field line, bringing both Flynn and Hawley in to score. London Camelo (Bristol, R.I.) followed this with a single of his own, allowing Morin to cross the plate and giving the Hawks a 5-2 lead. Roger Williams would shut out the Leopards for the rest of the game, giving the Hawks the win.
Roger Williams (11-2, 1-0 CCC) will continue their home stand on Thursday, in a non-conference game against Babson at 3 PM.
