EAST BOSTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University baseball team swept Suffolk in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader on Saturday, winning an 11 inning opener, 4-3, and game two, 13-5.
The opening game started as a defensive stalemate, with both teams unable to score through the first five innings. Suffolk broke the deadlock in the sixth inning, capitalizing on an error to take a 1-0 lead. They extended their lead in the seventh inning with Max Iorio's clutch double, driving in two more runs to make it 3-0 in favor of Suffolk.
However, the Hawks refused to back down. In the ninth inning, Roger Williams mounted a thrilling comeback, sparked by
Aidan Hawley's RBI hit by pitch, followed by
London Camelo's two-RBI single to tie the game at 3-3 and force extra innings.
The drama continued into the eleventh inning when
Christopher Flynn delivered the decisive blow for Roger Williams, driving in the go-ahead run with a single through the right side, putting the Hawks ahead for the first time in the game.
Pitcher
JT Gunzy tossed 4.1 scoreless innings in relief to earn the win.
MarkAnthony Glickman closed out the game in the eleventh inning to secure his fourth save of the season.
Despite the loss, Garrett Roberts delivered a strong performance on the mound for Suffolk University, pitching 7.1 innings of scoreless baseball before the Hawks' late-game rally.
In game two,
Lucas Lariviere picked up the win going 5.2 innings, with six hits, one earned run and three strikeouts. Hawley, Flynn, Morin,
Nick Sheehan, and
Ty Cali each picked up a pair of hits in the game.
The game kicked off with Suffolk University taking an early lead in the first inning, but Roger Williams quickly responded with a run of their own in the fourth inning, with Cali singling up the gut to bring in Sheehan. Suffolk would add a pair of runs in the fifth taking a 3-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, the Hawks exploded for eight runs, fueled by key hits from Sheehan, Flynn, and
Jack Morin. A series of errors by Suffolk's defense further compounded the Hawks' ability to score allowing Roger Williams to extend their lead to 9-3.
Despite Suffolk's efforts to rally late in the game, Roger Williams maintained their momentum, adding two more runs in the eighth and ninth inning to seal the victory.
Roger Williams (13-2, 3-0 CCC) are scheduled to host Curry on Tuesday, Apr. 2 at 3:00 pm. The Hawks will then travel to UMass Boston on Thursday, Apr. 4 at 3:00 pm, before closing out the week with a CCC doubleheader against Gordon in Wenham on Saturday, Apr. 6
