BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University softball team fell to the Bison of Nichols College in both games of their Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader, 4-1 in game one and 9-6 in game two.
In the opener, the Hawks saw
Raegen Germano pitch 7.0 innings, giving up a pair of hits, with two earned runs, striking out three.
Shannon Starratt had a pair of hits with a solo home run.
Taylor Howell and
Christina Denovellis both came around to score.
The Bison opened up scoring in the third inning with Chloe Steiniger hitting a two-run homerun, before Erin Gour put a ball over the outfield fence in left field, with Allie Silliman aboard, taking a 4-0 lead.
Roger Williams responded with a home run of their own of the bat of Starratt over the left center field wall, but the Hawks were held scoreless the rest of the contest to close out the loss.
In game two,
Skye Merrow picked up the loss giving up five runs, two earned with five strikeouts in her relief outing.
Both squads picked up three runs in the first inning, with Silliman, Gour, and Lilly Fangel each picking up RBI hits, with Gour hitting a triple. The Hawks answered back with Denovellis grounding out to second, with the bases loaded, but was enough to bring in
Hailey Williams from third, advancing all of the runners.
Nicolette Fraser then hit a ball into center field with the Bison fielder, dropping the ball, allowing
Jaime Wells and Starratt to score.
Nichols tacked on a run in the top of the third, but Roger Williams again responded with Howell hitting an RBI single to left center, with the bases loaded to bring in the game tying run.
The Bison again responded to level the score at 6-6, with a single to center field bringing in two. With the two teams knotted up heading into extra innings, the Bison scored three times in the eighth to take the win.
Roger Williams (9-7, 0-2 CCC) will take on Salve Regina on Wednesday, Apr. 3 at 3:30 pm for a single game, before facing Hartford on Saturday, Apr. 6 at 12:00 pm for a doubleheader.
